EMPORIA, Kan. — A Lyons man has been convicted of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault in the October, 2020 shootings of Lyons Police Sergeant Cory Ryan and Lyons High School teacher and coach Brian Friess.

Adam Hrabik was convicted Friday by a Lyon County jury in a trial held in Emporia on a change of venue from Rice County. According to reports at the time, Hrabik had pulled a gun and threatened Friess while he was mowing a lawn, which led Friess to call police.

Ryan, who was the first officer on the scene, was shot multiple times and Friess was also shot. Both have since recovered from their injuries.

The case was prosecuted by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and was heard by Senior Judge Merlin Wheeler, who was designated by the Kansas Supreme Court to hear the case last September. Initially the case was to have been heard in Ellis County, but was moved to Emporia shortly after Judge Wheeler was assigned to hear the case in place of the judge initially assigned.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 21.
