HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two members of the Kansas Highway Patrol were recognized Saturday by Kansas State Fair Officials for the efforts that saved the life of a Hutchinson woman at last year’s Fair.
During the last Saturday of the 2022 fair Master Trooper Clayton Hill of Sabetha and Trooper Justin Mueller of Wichita were on routine patrol when they were flagged down outside the Swine, Sheep and Goat Building where Tanya Hoskinson had collapsed in the show ring during the swine show.
Troopers Hill and Mueller administered chest massage and utilized an AED machine until EMS arrived, at which point she was revived and taken to the hospital.
The troopers were presented certificates of recognition as “unexpected heroes” by Hoskinson, along with General manager Bryan Schulz, Fair Board president Paula Landoll-Smith, and Fair Board member Sarah Green. Master Trooper Hill by the way is a cousin of Green.
Shortly after Schulz became fair manager, a grant was secured to purchase AED units from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, the first to be placed on the fairgrounds. During the presentation Schulz said this was an early priority of his to enhance safety measures.
Funding has been secured to purchase additional AED units so nearly every building on the fairgrounds will have one.
