KHP Releases Names of the Eight Fatalities in Crash Near Greeley Sunday

GREELEY, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol has released more information on a Sunday evening crash on US 169 northeast of Greeley that killed eight people and injured one another. It occurred just before 5:45 p.m. at US 169 and Virginia Road, in the southeast corner of Franklin County.

The Highway Patrol crash report said a vehicle driven by Jaimon Gilstrap, 33, of Tulsa was attempting to pass a slower moving vehicle when he he and a northbound vehicle driven by Alexander Ernst, 37, of Ames, Iowa both attempted to make an avoidance maneuver to the shoulder, resulting in a head on collision.

Both drivers died in the crash along with three passengers in each vehicle. The passengers in the Gilstrap vehicle who died were identified as Kyron Gilstrap, 14 and Donald Laster,14, both of Tulsa, and Wayne Walls, 41, of Talala, Okla. 

A fourth passenger in that vehicle, Braden Walls, 15, of Talala, was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital with what has since been reported to be minor injuries.

The passengers in the Ernst vehicle were identified as John Elliott, 76, Norleen  Elliott, 69, and Madalyn Elliott, 33, all of Chesterfield, MO.

The crash, in which at least one vehicle caught on fire, forced the closure of US 169 between Garnett and Paola for about nine hours, reopening early Monday morning.
