Kansas Apprentice Champion, KMW Ltd, Honors Graduates Marking National Apprenticeship Week

STERLING, Kan. — KMW Ltd, a strong Kansas Apprentice Champion, will be hosting an event celebrating the U.S. Department of Labor’s 10th Annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW). The U.S. Department of Labor established NAW to showcase and promote high-quality, in-demand career pathway opportunities through Registered Apprenticeships. NAW is a nationwide celebration where employers, apprentices, graduates, industry representatives, labor organizations, community-based organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and Federal, State, and Local government agencies host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship. The aim of NAW is to strengthen the economy by developing a highly skilled workforce to meet industry needs and create pathways for career seekers to obtain quality jobs.

This year, we have a unique opportunity to highlight the progress made in apprenticeships nationally and within individual regions and states. This progress is the result of the hard work of many partners involved in the ApprenticeshipUSA program. Registered Apprenticeship is an important strategy for improving job quality and creating access to well-paying jobs for everyone. We want to emphasize how the role of Registered Apprenticeship has grown significantly in relevance and importance while remaining a key component of our nation’s ongoing economic growth.

Registered Apprenticeship is a proven pathway to develop a diverse pipeline of employees, meeting the demand for skilled workers while equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge for success on the job and advancement in their careers. Jona Thomas, KMW Ltd’s Human Resources Director says, “We are proud to support National Apprenticeship Week and to showcase the impact apprenticeships have on building the workforce in this country.” KMW Learning Academy apprenticeships, which began in 2021, create an “earn while you learn” career pathway, allowing workers to grow skills, advance into higher-level jobs within KMW, and increase financial stability. This is a win-win for KMW Ltd and its team.

During On-the-Job Training (OJT), resident apprentices work in the plants and receive hands-on training from an assigned KMW mentor. While engaging in work, apprentices gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be proficient in the occupation they choose as their focus. KMW’s Learning Academy Apprentice Program currently offers several courses: assembly, fabricator, dock worker, material coordinator/expeditor, and maintenance (all one-year programs) as well as a two-year welding program. Currently, there are 10 employees enrolled in the program.
