Have you recently gotten a message saying that you owe an unpaid toll and that if you don’t pay it, you will be fined or have a penalty?
The Kansas Department of Revenue, the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Division of Motor Vehicles are informing the public of a current nationwide scam from fraudsters impersonating these agencies. These messages are being sent to random individuals, claiming that they owe unpaid tolls in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.
Tolls are never collected through unsolicited texts, instant messages, or emails.
DriveKS is Kansas’ official toll payment system, operated by the Kansas Turnpike Authority. To see information regarding unpaid tolls, you will have to log in to an account on DriveKS or contact customer service directly. The only reason you might receive messages from DriveKS is if you’ve opted to receive notifications and you can control the communication preferences and opt out at any time.
If you receive a scam message:
Do NOT click on any links
Do NOT provide any personal or payment information.
Delete the message immediately.
These kinds of text message scams are successful because they try to scare people into acting quickly by threatening with penalties or with language such as “final notice”.
If you receive a text message claiming to be about unpaid tolls and suspect it is a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
It is important for you to protect your information. Stay informed and stay vigilant against these fraudulent attempts. Fraudsters are constantly changing tactics to exploit unsuspecting individuals through deceptive text messages.
