HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson firefighter received minor injuries in an early morning fire early today.

Division Chief Jesse Martin said the first arriving units in the 1400 block of North Monroe, called out at 1:21 AM, found heavy fire showing from the front porch on arrival which extended into the structure and attic space. Crews began their attack in the porch area before moving inside to complete extinguishment.

Two occupants of the home, which had working smoke detectors, escaped the fire while search crews rescued two cats that were still inside. One occupant was checked by EMS on the scene for smoke inhalation and heat exposure, while a firefighter had a hand injury and was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for Treatment.

The cause of the fire, which appears to have started on the exterior of the home, is undetermined at this time.
