HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Fire Department announced this week that the new Fire Station 1, 2222 North Main Street, will soon be in operation. Local contractor, Wiens and Company, has completed the majority of the construction of the new 5.3-million-dollar fire station. They will be finishing a few items in the upcoming week, with the department taking possession on June 5th. The fire department will officially begin operating out of the new fire station at 8:00 am on June 15, 2023.
The public is invited to attend a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 3:00 pm. An open house will follow the ribbon-cutting ceremony until 8:00 pm. For those of you who are not able to attend that day, an additional open house will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
The opening of Fire Station 1’s new facility is a continuation of an important partnership with the Kansas State Fair. The new facility replaces a 1950s building that was converted to a fire station and is focused on decreasing the risk of cancer for firefighters by incorporating separate gear storage and decontamination areas to clean contaminated gear and equipment, keeping it away from the living area of the firefighters while they are on duty.
“Please come join us for the opening of this important piece of infrastructure, that will serve our community for years to come,” said Fire Chief Steven Beer. “Tour the new facility, talk with firefighters, and enjoy some light refreshments with the entire family.”
