HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) is proud to continue its cherished Holiday Card Project, uniting over 1,000 students from the Hutchinson, Buhler, and Haven school districts to create personalized holiday cards for local healthcare workers. This heartwarming initiative, in collaboration with local schools and community organizations, spreads holiday cheer while strengthening the sense of community and connection.
This year’s project holds special significance due to HRHS’s ongoing partnership with The Clayworks at Disability Supports. The Clayworks’ clients contribute their artistic talents to create uniquely designed cards, adding a personal touch that enhances the project’s impact and fosters creativity within the community.
Inspired by the belief that small, meaningful gestures can create lasting change, HRHS envisioned a way to engage students in expressing kindness, gratitude, and empathy through handwritten messages. “This project allows children to show appreciation for those who care for others, reminding us all of the power of these simple acts,” said Benjamin Anderson, President and CEO of HRHS. “Each card reflects these core values, beautifully expressed by the children, offering a valuable lesson for us all.”
For the students, the project offers more than just a chance to brighten someone’s day—it’s also an opportunity to learn about the vital roles healthcare workers play in their community. Krystal Young, Deputy Superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools, shared her thoughts on the significance of the collaboration: “Partnering with Hutchinson Regional for the Holiday Card Project provides our students with a meaningful opportunity to actively engage with our community. It also allows them to demonstrate compassion—one of Hutchinson Public Schools’ core values—and express gratitude to our healthcare workers.”
The completed cards—filled with messages of hope, encouragement, and appreciation—were distributed just in time for the holiday season to healthcare and assisted and independent living organizations throughout the community, including Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, The Wesley, Sunshine Meadows, PrairieStar Health Center, and Mennonite Friendship Communities. Each delivery offered a moment of joy and reassurance to those who dedicate their days to caring for others.
Mark Mains, President and CEO of The Wesley, reflected on the impact the cards
had on his team: “The employees of The Wesley were delighted to receive Christmas cards with handwritten messages from area school children! The holidays can be a stressful time for our staff members, and receiving extra support and uplifting sentiment from kids helps bring the spirit of the season front and center. We appreciate HRHS coordinating this effort to support the people providing such important services to the seniors under our care. The cards are truly a blessing!”
As we reflect on the heartwarming impact of this year’s Holiday Card Project, we are reminded that the true spirit of the season lies in the small, meaningful gestures that connect us all. This initiative not only celebrates the power of kindness but also highlights the importance of community involvement in creating a culture of care. Each card, with messages carefully crafted by the students, serves as a reminder that we are all part of something greater—working together to uplift one another, especially those who provide vital care to our community.
