HPD Arrests Suspect for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – On Thursday, May 11 at 4:42 p.m. officers with the Hutchinson Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of west 12th in reference to a white male shooting a firearm 3-5 times.  Once officers arrived on the scene, they heard an additional gunshot and established a perimeter.

A short time later a white male emerged from a residence in the direction of the gunshots.  The male was detained without incident and was identified as Ryan Rutherford WM/50 who resides in that block.

The investigation revealed that the shots were intentionally fired into the ground/backdrop. Due to initial uncertainty, the Hutchinson Police Department Emergency Response Team was utilized to clear the residence and evidence was later recovered.

Additional evidence on the scene suggested that natural gas and water were being distributed to the residence unlawfully.  Rutherford was subsequently arrested for 1) Criminal Discharge of a Firearm within the city limits and 2) Theft of services and transported to the Reno County Detention Facility to be held on a $1500 bond.

Rutherford is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.  HPD is asking anyone who has information on this case or any criminal activity to please call Crime Stoppers of Reno County at 1-800-222-TIPS, the Hutchinson Police Department at 620-694-2834, or use your P3Tips App on your smartphone.
