HUTCHINSON, Kan. – December 19, 2025 – Crews remain on scene working small hot spots and tree fires. Fire weather is very high again today and crews are making sure we do not get a new start from this fire.

Damage assessment is ongoing however we are confident in saying that only 1 home sustained minor damage. No injuries to residents, firefighters, or animals.

The fire crossed Plum Street 4 times placing approx. 40 homes at risk. Crews did an outstanding job stopping the Eastern moving fire flank and limited it to expanding only 1000 feet to the East of Plum Street. The fire consumed approx. 450 acres.

60 large hay bales were on fire throughout the night requiring attention from HFD and Hutchinson Public Works. All are out currently.

We thank the Hutchinson residents that headed the evacuation warnings. Though the fire ended up being much smaller than the evacuation area, there was an absolute potential for this fire to spread much further in a very short amount of time.

This is just the start of Hutchinson and Reno Counties wildfire season. Please stay vigilant and prepare ahead of time. HFD has programs to inform the public on how to prepare your property for wildfire and create a defensible area.
