GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo is excited to welcome attendees back for its Fifth Annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the zoo located at 2123 Main Street.
Highlighting the fifth anniversary celebration is special guest Curious George with Smoky Hills PBS. Curious George will be available to meet guests and take photos from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. First introduced in 1941, the beloved monkey has been a staple of children’s books, tv shows, films, magazines and even a video game, encouraging children to explore science, engineering, math and the world around them.
The first 500 visitors will receive a reusable Earth Day bag, along with a coupon for a free ice cream cone at Dairy Queen, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Eldridge Fencing, Sunflower Diversified, Dairy Queen, Anderson Schwarz and Freedom Claims Management.
Smoky Hills PBS, along with several educational vendors, will be stationed throughout the zoo including Heartland Farms, Women for Kansas, Barton Community College STEM Club, Discount Bins and the Central Kansas Christian Academy.
Rosewood ECycle will conduct demonstrations featuring its e-cycle and tomato plants, while the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host an interactive game. The Great Bend Zoological Society will provide popcorn and Sunflower Diversified will offer giveaways and information on their services.
Zookeepers will be around for animal meet-and-greets and keeper chats throughout the day, providing insight into the daily care, enrichment and conservation efforts done behind the scenes at the Brit Spaugh Zoo.
Avast Ye Java, Freaking Delicious Cheesecake and Soda Bop will be serving up some delicious food and drinks in the parking lot. A kid’s fun zone with bounce houses and face painting will be set up at the zoo’s entrance. The bounce houses are made possible by sponsors Club 1 Fitness, Rosewood ECycle, Discount Bins, Mark’s Custom Signs and Nex-Tech.
The Fifth Annual Earth Day Celebration is shaping up to be the zoo’s biggest yet with even more vendors and activities than in previous years to provide a fun and educational day for the entire family!
In the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved into the Raptor Center and Ed Shed building. Bounce houses may be unavailable if weather is uncooperative.
