GREAT BEND, Kan. — Great Bend and Ellinwood fire crews battled an abandoned house fire on the southeast edge of Great Bend in sub-zero wind chills early this morning.

The Great Bend Fire Department was called just before 3 a.m. to the fire in the 200 block of Pine Street, and on arrival the structure was fully engulfed with flames coming through the roof.

A defensive stance was taken with the Ellinwood Fire Department brought in on mutual aid. Crews were on scene for about 2 ½ hours, during which time the wind chills were in the 20s below zero.

The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting in the investigation as to the cause of the fire.
