Early Morning Fire in the Landfill

SHARE NOW

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At 02:38 AM Hutchinson Fire crews were dispatched to the area of the landfill for a possible outside fire. First arriving fire crews confirmed a working fire in the ‘Pit” and began coordinating extinguishment with landfill personnel. The initial involved area was roughly 200ft x 300ft in size. Multiple dozers and front-end loaders were utilized to scrap the burning material off the pit and separated so it could be smothered and extinguished.

Currently crews are still working to remove all burning materials and hot spots from the Pit.

HFD would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that with the increase in lithium-ion batteries in our households, they need to be disposed of properly. Please locate your closest lithium-ion battery recycling drop off location and dispose of them there instead of your household waste containers.
