HUTCHINSON, Kan. – December 18, 2025 – In a press conference at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, Jeremy Unruh -Division Chief of Operations- said that the Hutchinson Fire Department was considering the fire contained at this time.

At 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, the Hutchinson Fire Department received a call of a fire in the ditch along 82nd Street between Monroe and Plum.  The first units on scene faced difficult conditions and a rapidly moving fire due to the heavy wind conditions at the time.  The fire moved Southeast and consumed an estimated 500 acres throughout the afternoon.  HFD immediately called for additional assistance, which resulted in three additional counties responding to the fire.

The fire spanned from 82nd Street to the 6600 block, and from the east of Blue Spruce to east of Plum Street.

Crews will be on scene throughout the night to continue putting out hot spots and securing properties.  Unruh said there were still numerous tress and haybales on fire at the time of the press conference.  An assessment will be done of Friday to determine the number of out buildings injured in the fire, currently there are no known homes damaged due to the fire and no known injuries.

The HFD hopes to allow property owners to return to their properties this evening, and will release more information later this evening.
