HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than 400 fifth graders from Hutchinson USD 308, Buhler USD 313, and Nickerson USD 309 elementary schools will attend Dillon Nature Center’s annual Conservation Day on May 7.
Dillon Nature Center staff, along with conservation professionals from across the state, will lead students through several stations that focus on nature and conservation education. Topics include: Soils, Ducks & Wetlands, Skins & Skulls, Archaeology in Agriculture, Prairie Conservation, Forestry, Composting, Soil Health & Erosion, and Pollinators. Sessions will be held in both the morning and afternoon throughout the nature center.
Rebecca McElroy, nature education coordinator at Dillon Nature Center, organized this year’s Conservation Day, which educates students on the care and protection of the earth’s natural resources (air, minerals, plants, soil, water, and wildlife) for future generations. Dillon Nature Center staff and volunteers work with conservation professionals from the Kansas Forest Service, USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service, K-State Research and Extension, and US Fish & Wildlife Service, among others.
