HAYS, Kan. — Hays Police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating a late Saturday night domestic violence incident that left one person dead and another hospitalized.
The incident was initially reported about 11:40 PM by a minor inside the home who said a physical altercation was in progress between a woman and man, the latter in possession of a firearm. Two other minors were believed to be inside the residence.
After the man refused to allow others to enter or exit the residence, the area was secured and special response teams from Hays Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol including a crisis negotiator were called in.
The woman in the residence was allowed to exit around 1:22 AM Sunday and was taken initially to HaysMed with trauma to the head and later transferred to a Wichita Hospital. The minors in the home were allowed to leave just before 6:45.
As negotiations continued a gunshot was heard by officers, and after electronic surveillance was used to investigate inside officers made entry inside where the subject was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was declared dead about 8:15 AM.
Pending notification of the family, the name of the subject and location of the incident are not being released.
