Careyville Tornado Siren Relocates to Improve Coverage

SHARE NOW

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The City of Hutchinson is notifying residents in the Careyville subdivision that the outdoor emergency warning siren serving the area is currently offline due to an equipment failure, possibly related to a lightning strike.

Because the siren is aging and its current placement is not ideal, the City will take this opportunity to repair and relocate the unit. The siren is currently located behind 1620 Center St. The new location will be approximately 2030 E Ave G, within the City’s drainage easement.

Relocating the siren will:

  • Improve coverage for the Careyville subdivision and surrounding area when the warning siren sounds
  • Provide better access for maintenance and repairs
  • Move the siren off private property

Project Timing

Relocation and repairs are expected to begin on or before April 3, 2026. During the relocation, crews will complete necessary repairs, and the siren will be placed back online once installed and tested at the new location.

Important Reminder

Outdoor warning sirens are intended to alert people who are outdoors to seek additional information and take shelter. Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio, local media, and trusted mobile alerts.

The City appreciates residents’ patience as we work to repair and relocate this critical emergency warning infrastructure.
