BURLINGTON, Kan. — Burlington Police are investigating a scam report involving a local business.

Last Friday, an unknown person called the 11th Lane Roastery and deceived two young employees into removing $450 from the register and sending it via a texted bar code to the suspect, who claimed he was from the Sheriff’s Office and was investigating a counterfeit money case.

The Caller then instructed one of them to withdraw $3,000 from their personal account. While in the drive-thru at the bank, that employee became suspicious, realized he was being scammed, and disconnected the call.

In a statement, police said if you get a suspicious call requesting money or other sensitive information, hang up immediately and contact local law enforcement to verify their identity.

By the way, real law enforcement officers will not ask you to send money, bar codes or the scammer’s favorite, gift cards, based on a phone request.
