NEWTON, Kan. — Bethel College President Dr. Jon C. Goering announced Monday he will step down June 30th after eight years of leading the North Newton college.

In announcing his plans to step down, he said there aren’t any circumstances behind this, but he said he believes it would benefit both him and the community to have a new leader with different skills, perspectives and sensibilities.

A Bethel graduate, Dr. Goering served as a faculty member and academic leader at other institutions before returning to Bethel in January, 2018.

Bethel board chair Wynn Goering said Jon led the college through some challenging circumstances, and is leading it stronger than he found it, including restoration of full accreditation status, doubling the size of the college’s endowment, and various other projects along with guiding it through COVID-19.

An interim president is scheduled to be announced March 30th and a national search for Dr. Goering’s successor will be undertaken during the 2026-27 academic year.
