HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce the most recent recipient of the Classroom Hero Award presented by Heartland Credit Union.

Marlene Schroeder teaches 9-12 math classes at Buhler USD 313 Ad Astra Academies. Schroeder took this position a little over a year ago after coming out of retirement. Mrs. Schroeder has been teaching for the Buhler school district for a total of 42 years.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio honors a different educator, selected from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “hero” gift basket, courtesy of community partners Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors of Hutchinson, Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Hutch Putt and The Foto Cowboy.

Cindy Couchman, USD 313 Superintendent said Mrs. Schroeder is amazing.

“You were a mentor to me, both teaching math and when you started at Prairie Hills Middle School,” Couchman said.

Mrs. Schroeder was a legend at Prairie Hills Middle School according to Couchman.

“She retired and now she has become a legend at our alternative and virtual schools,” Couchman said, and said to Mrs. Schroeder, “We are blessed that you get to influence our kids and district every day.”

Mrs. Schroeder influenced faculty and staff as well. One faculty member said she is taught every day by Schroeder just by being around her.

A former student of Schroeder’s and now USD 313 faculty member, Paul Erickson, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment 6-12 said he wouldn’t be where he is without Mrs. Schroeder. There were others at the Classroom Hero presentation who said their parents or children were taught by Mrs. Schroeder as well, which showed just how many people she influenced.

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines of our local schools. Nominations can be submitted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroom-hero.
