McPHERSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Windom Elementary School Principal Jon Paden as the most recent recipient of the Classroom Hero Award presented by Peoples Bank and Trust.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio randomly selects a different educator, from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “Thank You” gift basket. Gift items are courtesy of community partners, including Peoples Bank and Trust, Midway Motors and Stutzman’s Greenhouse.

Mr. Paden has been the principal at Windom Elementary School for 29 years.

He went to McPherson College, where he earned his teaching degree, then taught in McPherson for five years before becoming principal of WES.

“This was my first administrative job and it’s where I’ve been ever since,” Paden said.

What he loves most about being principal is the interaction with the kids and staff at the school.

“We just have such great staff,” Paden said. “They make my job easier. It’s one of the reasons I’ve stuck around as long as I have.”

Mr. Paden was surprised with the Classroom Hero Award on Monday during a school assembly in the WES gymnasium.

“I’m speechless because this is a huge surprise,” Paden said after receiving the award. “I love working with this staff. I love working with these kids.”

To the students and staff members sitting in the bleachers, he added, “I appreciate each one of you every day and all that you do.”

In his nomination, Mr. Paden was described as someone who is loved by many, always making kids feel welcome.

The nominator added that Mr. Paden also teaches kids lessons on behavior in school and in real life.

“He cares a lot about his community and wants what is best for everyone,” the nominator said. “He’s done a lot this past year while going through personal issues. But he stayed strong and has done what he always has. He has been a leader. He’s more than just a classroom hero. He’s a school hero.

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines in our local schools. Nominations are continually being accepted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroomhero.
