McPHERSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Tammy Feil, Canton-Galva Elementary School third grade teacher as the most recent recipient of the Classroom Hero Award presented by Peoples Bank and Trust.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio randomly selects a different educator, from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “Thank You” gift basket. Gift items are courtesy of community partners, including Peoples Bank and Trust, Midway Motors and Stutzman’s Greenhouse.

Mrs. Feil has been teaching for 32 years. She started at Canton-Galva Elementary School teaching kindergarten for nine years and then moved to third grade where she’s been ever since.

When asked what made her want to become a teacher, Feil said, “I think mainly the teachers that I had in high school were just an inspiration and I just felt like, ‘Yeah, I think I could do that job’.”

She went to McPherson High School then graduated from McPherson College.

Mrs. Feil loves being a teacher and shared that when it comes to the third-grade level, she enjoys the grade of independence, the curriculum, and the students’ eagerness to learn.

“They’re still at that point where they just love to learn,” Feil added.

Mrs. Feil said that instead of being more in the “learning to read” stage, the students are more “reading to learn.”

“That just makes it fun too,” Feil said. “And I just have an exceptional class this year, so it’s been great.”

In a classroom hero nomination, Mrs. Feil was described as going above and beyond for her students, making them feel at home in her classroom, sometimes staying late to help her students understand materials in order to be more successful.

The nominator added that Mrs. Feil’s students leave each day with confidence about the work they put in.

“My daughter gets upset when it’s the weekend and she doesn’t get to see her favorite teacher,” a nominator said. “Mrs. Feil is a fantastic teacher in the Canton-Galva community and deserves to be recognized for all her hard work and dedication the last 30+ years.”

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines in our local schools. Nominations are continually being accepted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroomhero.
