TOPEKA, Kan. — The 9th Judicial District Nominating Commission is set to meet on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at noon to discuss the process for nominating a candidate to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy in McPherson County.
The 9th Judicial District Nominating Commission includes Justice Melissa Standridge as the nonvoting chair, along with Brian Bina, Ann Elliott, David O’Dell, and Glen Snell from McPherson, and Thomas Adrian, Jana McKinney, John Robb, and George “Chip” Westfall from Newton.
This vacancy arises due to the expiration of District Magistrate Judge Amanda Faber’s term. The 9th Judicial District encompasses Harvey and McPherson counties.
The nominating commission’s role is to seek nominations and conduct interviews with nominees, with these interviews being open to public observation. The commission is responsible for selecting the appointee for the district magistrate judge vacancy.
To qualify as a nominee, an individual must be a resident of McPherson County at the time of taking office and during their tenure, must have graduated from a high school, secondary school, or hold an equivalent qualification, and must be either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court within 18 months to become certified.
After serving for one year, new judges must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to continue in their position. If retained, they will serve a four-year term.
The meeting will be accessible to the public via a livestream on the Kansas judicial branch’s YouTube channel.
