The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to buckle up and put their phones down during a statewide safety campaign running through the 31st.
Drivers can expect increased law enforcement on local roads and highways. Officials warn that reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds — the length of a football field at 55 miles per hour.
Kansas law also restricts handheld phone use in active school zones and certain construction zones.
