IOLA — Allen County’s Adopt A Child Christmas gift assistance program hopes to help more than 200 children this holiday season, with opportunities for families to receive gifts and community members to sponsor children or donate money.

First Baptist Church of Iola sponsors the program with support from the Iola Police Department, Allen Community College athletics and other community members.

Sign-ups will take place at First Baptist Church of Iola on:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Parents or guardians must bring an ID showing their current address or a current bill showing their name and address. They must also bring the child’s State of Kansas medical card.

Sponsors may adopt one or more children, with an expected cost of approximately $100 per child. Organizers ask that each child receive at least two practical items, such as shoes or clothing, and two gifts, such as toys, books or games.

Unwrapped, labeled gifts must be delivered to First Baptist Church no later than Friday, Dec. 4. Monetary donations may be made at Emprise Bank in Iola to purchase gifts for children who are not adopted.

Gifts will be distributed at the church Friday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, email [email protected] or visit the “Adopt A Child” Facebook page.
