Blue Dragons Earn Home Sweep Against Seward County

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team earned its ninth sweep of the season on Wednesday night in a 3-0 victory over Seward County to open up the second half of Jayhawk Conference play at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons held the Saints to .059 hitting and completed a season sweep of the Saints with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 victory.

Hutchinson is now 15-9 overall and 7-2 in the KJCCC. The Dragons open a two-match road trip on Saturday against Cloud County in Concordia. Seward County is now 11-15 (4-6).

The Blue Dragons held their 10th opponent of the season to less than .100 hitting percentage. The Saints had 28 kills and 21 attack errors on 119 total attacks to hit .059.

The Dragons hit .219 with 39 kills and 16 errors on 108 total attacks. The Dragons out-blocked Seward County 7-3 and out-dug the Saints 52-42. Hutchinson also had three ace serves.

Sophomore Mattie Gallaher tied a season high with 10 kills on .600 hitting. She had just one error in 15 attacks. Galliher also had four blocks and four digs.

Freshman Giovanna Monteiro also had 10 kills on .304 hitting. Monteiro had six digs.

Sophomore Lauren Vasquez had nine kills, six digs and two blocks.

Freshman setter Luisa Richa finished with 27 assists, five digs and two kills.

Sophomore libero Clara Oliveira had 20 digs, the 18th time in her career with 20 or more digs in a match. She also moved past Sarah Claborn into sixth place on the career digs list with 949.

Luisa Bergantini and Deniz Ucar had 12 kills lead to lead Seward County.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons took an early 7-2 lead after a Richa kill. The Saints got back within one point six times, the final time at 17-16. Monteiro’s kill started a 5-1 run to build a 22-17 lead. The Dragons hit .255 and sided out at a 75-percent clip to close out the set. The Saints were held to .106 hitting.

SET 2: The Blue Dragons trailed 9-7 and used a timeout. A Vasquez kill stopped that Seward run, then back-to-back kills from Galliher and Monteiro gave the Dragons a 13-10 lead. The Dragon lead grew to 16-12 after a Saint attack error. At 19-15, Macedo came up with a big kill, then Galliher and Macedo had a double block for a six-point Dragon lead. Vasquez closed out the set with a kill. The Dragons held Seward County to .026 hitting and out-blocked Seward County 4-0.

SET 3: For the second-straight set, the Blue Dragons trailed 9-7. A Monteiro kill tied the set at 10-10. That started a 5-1 Hutchinson run. The Saints pulled within one at 15-14, but the Dragons scored seven in a row on a Vasquez service run. Galliher and two kills, while Monteiro and Gabi Muller had kills as the Dragons built a 22-14 lead. The Dragons closed out the match with kills from Richa and Ty’Lia Davis and a Galliher service ace on match point.
