HIGHLAND – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team saw one streak come to an end while extending another in a decisive Jayhawk Conference road victory against the Highland Scotties on Saturday.
Highland snapped Hutchinson’s three-game shutout streak, but the Blue Dragons extended their consecutive true-road game winning streak to 28 games with a 58-20 victory over Highland at Porter Family Stadium.
The Blue Dragons (6-0, 3-0 KJCCC) start a season 6-0 for the fifth-straight season. Hutchinson plays host to Independence at Noon next Saturday at Gowans Stadium. Highland is now 1-6 overall (1-2 KJCCC).
Hutchinson had a 7-0 lead before a second ran off the game clock on Saturday. Parker Grizzell‘s opening kickoff landed at the 7-yard line, was touched, but not controlled by a Highland returner and bounded into the end zone. Ravelle Leak covered the live ball in the end zone for a touchdown and a 7-0 Hutchinson lead.
There is no documented evidence of that type of a touchdown ever being scored in a college football game at any level.
The Blue Dragons also scored on the opening kickoff of the second half when DyVair McCray took High-land’s kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to open the second half.
Again, there is no documented evidence that a team scored on the opening kickoffs of each half with one team kicking and then receiving. The University of Texas scored on opening kickoffs of each half in 2016, but the Longhorns were the receiving team in each of those halves.
The Blue Dragons rolled up 430 total yards, getting 296 passing yards and 134 rushing yards. Hutchinson had its first offensive turnovers of the season with two interceptions.
Quarterback Randy Phillips was 25 of 35 passing for a 268 yards. Back-up quarterback Jace Jefferson was 3 for 4 for 28 yards. Each Dragon quarterback had one interception.
Aiden Bruce had single-game career highs of six receptions for 53 yards. Bobby Shaw III returned to the lineup after missing three games with four receptions and 63 yards. In addition to his 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, McCray had season highs of four catches and 56 yards. McCray had 331 all-purpose yards.
The Blue Dragons had five rushing touchdowns, led by Leak, who had 71 yards on only three carries with a touchdown. Jayden Hall had 62 rushing yards on 13 carries and a score. Rashaud Hurt had two rushing touchdowns and Ryan Campbell had one rushing touchdown.
Grizzell reached 10 or more points scored in a game as a kicker for the third time this season, going 7 of 7 on extra points and 3 of 3 on field goals of 27, 32 and 34 yards.
Defensively, Highland scored the first points against the Blue Dragons since the second quarter of Game 2 at Ellsworth on August 29 with a late first-quarter touchdown. The Scotties had season highs against the Blue Dragons of 20 points and 250 passing yards. But the Blue Dragons had four takeaways with a Dylan Gill interception and four fumble recoveries Leak, Jack Sells and Howie Rezac.
After allowing 20 points and 240 total yards to the Scotties in the first half, the Blue Dragons allowed no points and 73 total yards in the second half.
After Leak’s kickoff recovery in the end zone gave the Dragons a 7-0 lead, the offensive tacked on 10 more points in the opening quarter to take a 17-0 lead.
First, Hurt’s 1-yard plunge capped a 75-yard, 11-play Hutchinson scoring drive that took 4:12 and the Dragons lead 14-0 with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter. After getting a stop on a bad Highland punt snap at the Scottie 47, the Dragons added a 27-yard field goal with 1:19 to play for a 17-0 lead.
Highland got on the board with 7 second remaining in the first quarter when DaeOnte Mitchell hit a 48-yard touchdown pass to Catrell Lee. The Scotties missed the point-after try and the Dragons led 17-6.
The teams then traded scores in the second quarter. Leak gashed the Scotties for 60-yard touchdown run with 14:15 to go in the second quarter for a 24-6 lead. Mitchell’s 1-yard quarterback sneak with 7:51 left, cut the Dragon lead to 24-12 after a missed two-point conversion.
The Dragons responded with an 85-yard scoring drive that was finished off by a Hall 17-yard touchdown run with 4:19 left. Artzion Williams answered for the Scotties with a 13-yard TD pass from Mitchell with 1:50 to go. With a two-point conversion, the Dragons lead 31-20.
Hutchinson then took the final possession of the half from its own 35 and used nine plays to drive to the Highland 15 and Grizzell kicked a 32-yard field goal as time ran out and the Dragons lead 34-20.
The Dragons added 17 points in the third quarter, starting with McCray’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the half. Hurt scored his second touchdown of the game with 8:50 left on a 9-yard touchdown run for a 48-20 lead. Grizzell kicked a 34-yard field goal with 1:59 left for a 51-20 lead.
