HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A familiar gathering space in DCI Park is getting a new look as regional artists transform the pergola’s supporting pillars with original murals.

With seven pillars already completed by artists Jennifer Weigel and Ghost, the remaining pillars will be painted through Oct. 15 by a new group of regional artists. Artists include Annie LaForge, the Cosmosphere Education Team, Janice Richardson, and Whitney Knutson.

The Pillar Mural Project began in 2024 as part of a larger placemaking initiative. The program was developed by the Hutchinson EPIC cohort, with guidance and support from the Kansas Arts Commission (KAC). Supported by funding from KAC and the Hutchinson Community Foundation, Hutch Rec has implemented the placemaking projects in partnership with local business Data Center Inc. (DCI). Together, this team has reimagined and beautified DCI Park in Downtown Hutchinson.

“Public art is vital to creating welcoming spaces,” Jacelyn Chambers, Hutch Rec Arts & Culture Coordinator, said. “It can be used to beautify, educate, share ideas, inspire community, and organically promote engagement between people and the world around us.”

Once finished, the pergola will feature a collection of twelve colorful original artworks designed by six distinct artists and art groups.

The community is invited to celebrate the completed project during October’s Third Thursday on Oct. 15. Artists will be recognized as part of the celebration.
