LYONS, Kan. – Emergency crews from Lyons Fire alongside Rice County Fire Department units out of Sterling and Little River battled a severe residential fire on Monday in Lyons. Severe conditions and rapid spread across the upper story, attic, and roof prompted incident command to shift to defensive operations, pulling all personnel out of the building.
To prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring homes, ensure public and firefighter safety, and fully extinguish the blaze, officials made the decision to deploy heavy machinery to strip the roof and ultimately demolish the structure. In a statement, the Lyons Fire Department shared that while community members might question or misunderstand the strategy behind these actions, this decision was carefully considered rather than made in haste.
Unfortunately, the homeowner suffered a near-total loss of personal belongings due to the heavy fire, smoke, and water damage.
