BURLINGTON, Kan. — The Coffey County Housing Authority has received a $21,870 Housing Preservation Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help residents remain in safe homes. The award was marked with a check presentation in downtown Burlington.
The housing authority works throughout Coffey County to improve and expand local housing. According to the county, it has administered more than $1 million in housing preservation and rehabilitation grants over the years, supporting repairs to roofs and furnaces and the installation of accessibility ramps. Its repair program accepts applications when funding is available and applicants meet program guidelines.
The authority also maintains a free rental listing for landlords and prospective tenants, provides information about homebuyer programs, and has developed affordable homes and moderate-income rental housing in the county.
Housing authority board members and Executive Director Lynzie Stukey joined USDA representatives at the presentation. Coffey County Economic Development Director Jenny Tatman, County Commissioner Mark Petterson, Coffey County Chamber of Commerce Director Chari Bauman, and U.S. Rep. Derek Schmidt also attended.
USDA’s Housing Preservation Grant program provides funding to organizations for the repair and rehabilitation of rural housing occupied by people with low or very low incomes. Details on how Coffey County residents can apply for assistance through the new award have not yet been announced.
