HESSTON, Kan. — The Hesston College women’s soccer team continued its strong run of form Saturday, scoring four goals in the first half and five more in the second to defeat Mission University 9-1. The victory improved the Larks to 5-1-3 on the season.
Hesston needed just 79 seconds to get on the board. Yesenia Sanchez opened the scoring off an assist from Brooklyn Bailey before Kristyn Oliver doubled the advantage in the 20th minute, again assisted by Bailey. Just over a minute later, Brooklyn Paskett made it 3-0 with assists from Sanchez and Jamie Seehusen.
The Larks continued to control the opening half, creating chance after chance in front of the Mission goal. Jalynn Tyree added the fourth goal in the 34th minute as Hesston carried a 4-0 advantage into halftime. The Larks outshot Mission 20-3 over the opening 45 minutes.
Hesston picked up right where it left off after the break. Shaniya Scott scored just 1:15 into the second half before Rena Itoga found the net three minutes later off Seehusen’s second assist of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Paskett scored her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute, with Seehusen collecting her third assist. Matilda Bautista followed with a goal off a Kailee Sanders assist in the 70th minute, and Sanders capped Hesston’s scoring in the 87th minute off an assist from Paskett. Mission’s Myla Skenderovic scored in the final minute for the 9-1 final.
Paskett led a balanced Hesston attack with two goals and an assist. Seehusen recorded three assists, while Bailey added two. Sanchez finished with a goal and an assist, and Sanders also contributed a goal and an assist. Oliver, Itoga, Scott, Tyree and Bautista each found the back of the net.
The Larks dominated the offensive numbers with a 44-5 advantage in shots, including 24-2 in shots on goal, while also earning 12 corner kicks to Mission’s one. Goalkeeper Keira Rankin played all 90 minutes and made one save.
The Larks will return to action Monday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Southwestern Christian University for a 1 p.m. match.
