HAYSVILLE, Kan. – Despite a hot and windy day, the McPherson girls tennis team continued their domination in the early part of the schedule, finishing first place at the Campus Invitational on Monday.
The Bullpups had 33 team points ahead of 6A Wichita East in second with 26 and Hutchinson in third with 20. With winds gusting over 30 mph, the conditions were tough for all of the players at times. Head coach Tyler Brown said: “What impressed me was how unfazed our girls were by it. They accepted the conditions, competed and found ways to win.”
All six athletes competing finishing in the top three with three divisions taking first place and not losing a match in the process.
In #1 Singles, Audra Sandbo had a first round bye and won her next two matches to finish in first place at 2-0. Ava Miller went 3-0 and won the #2 Singles division. In #2 Doubles, Piper VanCampen and Anne-Marie Holmes also had a first round bye and won their two matches for the day to finish in first place. Brenna Sullivan and Sadie Krug battled to a 2-1 finish on the day, taking third place.
Coach Brown side-noted that his favorite part of the day was the ride back home after the success the girls had. “Of course we want to win tournaments, compete for championships, and see how far we can go this season. But years from now, I’ll remember the relationships, the conversations, the laughs, the van rides and watching these girls grow up together.” He added “(I’m) proud of these girls–not just for the tennis players they have become, but for the young people they are becoming.”
The Bullpup varsity squad is back at it on the road today as they are competing in the Maize Invitational this afternoon and evening.
