The Moundridge Wildcats scored 20 points in the second quarter and 21 in the the third frame to defeat the Sedgwick Cardinals 41-0 in their home-opening football game Friday night.
“We leaned on our defense to start the game and they came up big,” said Moundridge football coach Tyler O’Connor. “Stellar special teams started the scoring and remained consistent throughout the game which ended up coming up big for us. We got better and will look to do so as we progress through the season.”
In the second quarter, Moundridge’s Blayne Scriner scored on a 70-yard punt return and ran for a 55-yard touchdown. Cyrus Blough kicked two field goals (46 and 37 yards) and added two PAT kicks for the a 20-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Moundridge’s Tione Wilson scored on a 46-yard TD run, Tramaine Wilson returned a fumble for a TD and Logan Greenwalt a caught a 19-yard TD pass from Alex Rose.
Blough made all three PAT kicks in the third quarter to give him 11 points.
The Wildcats rolled up 291 total yards (including 191 rushing). Rose passed for 100 yards and rushed for 24. Tione Wilson rushed for 115 yards on 10 carries.
Schriner caught 3 passes for 72 yards and Greenwalt caught 3 passes for 38. Schriner was responsible for 197 yards (72 receiving, 70 kick returns and 55 rushing).
Josh Koehn led the Wildcats’ defense with 9 tackles and intercepted a pass. James Storer and Schriner each had 8 stops. Graham Den Hartog made 5 tackles and recovered a fumble. Logan Wulf blocked a kick.
Moundridge (1-1) hosts Ellinwood (0-1-1) next Friday. Ellinwood lost to Smoky Valley 24-14 at home Friday. Sedgwick (0-2) hosts Remington (1-) next Friday.
