Just 14 1/2 hours after winning an intense four-set match over a nationally ranked opponent, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team posted the highest single-match team hitting percentage in program history against an NJCAA Division I opponent in Match 2 of the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson out-hit Missouri State-West Plains .567-.095 to roll by the Grizzlies in a sweep, 25-9, 25-10, 25-7 in a match that lasted only 58 minutes.
The Blue Dragons (7-2) won their fifth match in a row and will play No. 8 Trinity Valley at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Dragons are 2-0 in the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic.
The .567 attack percentage – 38 kills with only four attack errors on 60 total attacks – was the third-highest single-match attack percentage in program history, but the highest against an NJCAA Division I opponent. The previous high against a Division I foe was .548 against Pratt on September 22, 2021. The all-time single-match high is .588 against the Friends University JV in 2004.
Sophomores Mattie Galliher and Lauren Vasquez and freshman Giovanna Monteiro led a balanced Blue Dragon attack with nine kills each. Nine different Hutchinson players recorded kills in the match.
Galliher had a season-high nine kills on .428 hitting with three service aces and two block assists.
Vasquez posted the fifth-highest single-match attack percentage in program history at .818 with nine kills on 11 attacks and no errors. She added two digs and one ace.
Monteiro hit .643 with nine kills on 14 attacks with 12 digs and two ace serves.
Freshman setter Luisa Richa had 24 assists with four digs, three ace serves and three kills on four attacks.
The Blue Dragons had a season-high 12 ace serves.
SET 1: A Richa ace helped the Blue Dragons jump out to a 7-1 lead. Monteiro followed with an ace for a 9-3 lead. Back-to-back Ashley Scott aces boosted the Dragon advantage to 15-5 before the Grizzlies took a timeout. The Dragons went on a 7-0 run that was capped by a Richa setter dump for a kill for a 22-6 lead. Monteiro closed the set with kills on the Dragons’ final three points to win the set 25-9.
SET 2: The Blue Dragons blitzed the Grizzlies with a 10-0 run to start the set. Vasquez and Galliher had three kills each in the initial surge. The lead grew to 15-3 after a Richa ace and 18-4 after a Vasquez kill. The lead grew to as large as 16 points at 22-6 after a West Plains attack error. The Dragons closed out the set with a 25-10 win.
SET 3: Hutchinson led 6-0 after a Kelsi Maier kill and 10-1 after a Arianna Delgado ace serve. A 5-0 run capped by Ellie Prather‘s first kill of the Classic boosted the Dragon lead to 19-4. Hutchinson finished off the match with a pair of 3-0 runs, scoring six points on the final eight rallies of the match.
