STERLING, Kan. — Sterling defeated Mission (Mo.) 8-3 on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The Lady Warriors scored six times in the first half and added two more goals after halftime, finishing the game with 18 shots, including 13 on goal, while the Patriots totaled eight shots and six on goal. The Warriors recorded a season high of eight goals in the game.
Sterling scored six times in the first half and took a 6-1 lead into halftime. Marley Burgess-Duquette opened the scoring at 2:28, and Sterling kept pressure on Mission (Mo.) with April Isbell assisting Kadence Hardman‘s goal at 4:52 and Preslie Reffel‘s finish at 8:40 to make it 3-0. Gianna Randall added a goal off a Burgess-Duquette assist in the 21st minute, and Cheyenne Siler scored from Randall in the 32nd to push Sterling ahead 5-0. Mission (Mo.) answered after a brief attacking stretch of their own with a goal from Kadyn Garland, but Vivian Ramirez finished kept the Patriots at bay off a Reffel assist at 43:15 to send Sterling into the break up 6-1.
Sterling built on its advantage in the second half, with Hardman scoring her second goal of the day at 51:24 to make it 7-1. Burgess-Duquette extended the lead with her second goal finishing a Ramirez assist at 66:31 to push the lead to 8-1. The Lady Warriors also created additional chances around those goals, including a Reffel shot in the 59th minute and two later attempts from Burgess-Duquette. Mission (Mo.) answered with goals by Myla Skenderovic at 78:05 and 88:09, but Bella Duckworth made a save in the 76th minute and Siler added a defensive save in the 83rd to limit further damage. Sterling earned late corner kicks from Isbell and Sheridan Nguyen and closed out the match with an 8-3 win.
Burgess-Duquette scored twice, marking her first two goals as a Lady Warrior while also adding an assist and led Sterling with six shots, three on goal. Hardman also scored her first two collegiate goals and put all four of her shots on frame. Randall recorded a goal and an assist, with her goal credited as the game-winner. Isbell finished with two assists.
Up next, the Lady Warriors (1-1) will hosts Oklahoma Panhandle State (1-1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m.
