STERLING, Kan. — Sterling fell to Southwestern Christian University with a final score of 4-1 in the Lady Warrior’s season opener on Saturday, Aug. 29. Despite the loss, Sterling’s goalkeeper recorded 27 saves, facing a total of 31 shots on goal.
The opening period began with Bella Duckworth making multiple key saves to keep Sterling in contention. Despite these efforts, SCU broke through in the 7th minute with a goal from Shosona Graham, assisted by Sofia Jimenez, and then extended its lead with a penalty kick goal by Abbigail Johnson in the 18th minute. Yuli Montesflores added a third goal shortly thereafter.
Sterling responded with determination, narrowing the deficit when freshman April Isbell scored her first goal of the season in the 19th minute. The period concluded with the home team trailing 3-1.
The second period commenced with a strong defensive effort from Sterling, highlighted by goalkeeper Duckworth’s multiple saves. SCU maintained offensive pressure, but each attempt was thwarted by Duckworth’s attentive goalkeeping. Despite the defensive stand, Hadley McLanahan of the Eagles scored in the 83rd minute, extending the visitor’s lead.
Sterling’s Preslie Reffel attempted to respond with a shot in the final moments, but it was saved by Lorelai Puglisi. The period concluded with the score standing at 4-1 in favor of SCU.
April Isbell scored the team’s only goal. Preslie Reffel managed to make her presence known with a shot on goal. Sheridan Nguyen was active defensively, recording one defensive save. Bella Duckworth stood out with 27 saves, facing 31 shots throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Sterling (0-1) will host Mission (0-3) on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m.
