IOWA FALLS, Iowa – The defense started the Hutchinson Community College football team’s scoring onslaught on Saturday at Ellsworth with a Pick 6. The Blue Dragon offense added seven touchdowns and two field goals. The special teams chipped in two touchdowns of their own.
The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons had a number of tremendous performances at Cadet Field as Hutchinson rolled to a 76-3 victory over the Panthers in a battle of 1-0 teams.
Hutchinson (2-0) has its lone bye week next weekend before opening Jayhawk Conference play with a battle against No. 14 Garden City in a 7 p.m. kickoff on September 12 at Gowans Stadium.
The team superlatives from Saturday’s game were:
+ The Blue Dragons extended their program record road winning streak to 26 games;
+ The Dragons won their eighth-consecutive game against the Panthers;
+ The Blue Dragons surpassed the 70-point mark in a game for the 21st time in team history, including four times against Ellsworth;
+ The 73-point margin of victory is the ninth largest in team history and second largest against the Panthers.
Offensively, the Blue Dragons were led by quarterback Randy Phillips, who threw for a career-high four touchdowns passes, completing 11 of 20 passes for 133 yards. Sophomore receiver Bobby Shaw caught five passes for 80 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.
The Dragons had 239 passing yards and rushed for 100 yards.
Dylan Gill started off a strong Blue Dragon defensive performance with a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown on Ellsworth’s second series of the game.
The Blue Dragons had seven of their nine quarterback sacks in the first half as Hutchinson held Ellsworth to 57 total yards in the first two quarters. Andre Williams had 2.5 quarterback sacks to lead five different players with sacks.
The nine quarterback sacks tied for fifth most in team single-game history.
In addition to Gill’s Pick 6, the Blue Dragons’ got interceptions from Temaarick Johnson and Kolby Tyre and a fumble recovery by Ira Warren. LaDarrius Jemes had a team-high nine tackles.
Hutchinson held Ellsworth to 86 passing yards and six rushing yards. The Panthers snapped a nine-quarter scoreless streak with a Brandon Lane 36-yard field goal with 10:29 to go in the second quarter.
Freshman Blue Dragon kicker Parker Grizzell tied a Blue Dragon single-game record for a kicker with 16 points in one game. He had 10 extra-point kicks and field goals of 34 and 35 yards. Grizzell tied Michael Mesh, who had a 16-point game against Rezolution Prep in 2012.
Sophomore Aiden Bruce returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, the first return touchdown of his career.
Gill’s interception for touchdown game at the 11:12 mark of the opening quarter opened the scoring. Hutchinson made it 14-0 on a JB Price touchdown rush from 3-yards out with 2:06 to go in the opening quarter.
Phillips and Shaw connected for the first of their three touchdowns with a 15-yard reception on the first play of the second quarter for a 21-0 lead. Lane’s field goal with 10:29 to go cut the Hutchinson lead to 21-3.
The Dragons then scored three touchdowns in the final 6:22 of the first half. Shaw caught a 7-yard pass from Phillips for a 28-3 lead with 6:22 to go in the quarter. Tyler Tuel‘s first career reception as a Blue Dragon was a 4-yard touchdown pass from Phillips for a 35-3 lead with 2:31 to go. Bruce then had his 60-yard punt return for a touchdown with 1:46 to go for a 42-3 halftime lead.
Shaw caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Phillips with 13:04 to play in the third quarter to get the second-half scoring going for a 49-3 lead. The Dragons made it 56-3 when Kelby Tyre blocked a punt and Jayden Hall returned the loose ball 34 yards for a touchdown with 9:15 to go. Grizzell added his first field goal from 34 yards out for a 59-3 lead with 2:42 to go.
Hutchinson added 17 more points in the fourth quarter. Devin Voltaire caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Bravin Powell on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 66-3 lead. Grizzell kicked a 35-yard field goal with 8:15 remaining for a 69-3 lead. No. 3 quarterback Jace Jefferson had a 12-yard touchdown run with 1:36 to close the scoring out.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 11-4 all-time against Ellsworth, including 6-2 in games played in Iowa Falls. … Over the last five games played in the series, the Blue Dragons have outscored Ellsworth 367-17. … The Blue Dragons are now 25-9 all time against the three Iowa Conference schools. … This was the 16th time in program history the Blue Dragons kicked 10 or more extra points in a game. The last time the Dragons had nine or more quarterback sacks in a single game was last season when they had 10 sacks against Independence. … Quarterback Randy Phillips has six touchdown passes in two games. … Bobby Shaw III has five touchdown receptions in two games. … With three punts inside the 20-yard line on Saturday, sophomore punter Denzel More now has five puts inside the 20 for the season and 24 for his career.
