GILLETTE, Wyoming – The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team was stunned twice on Saturday in the 2026 season opener at Gillette Community College.
The Blue Dragons rallied from a two-goal deficit to Western Wyoming at halftime on Saturday at Pronghorn Soccer Stadium, but wasn’t able to make a second comeback as the Mustangs made a third goal scored in the 51st minute stand up for a 3-2 victory over Hutchinson.
The Blue Dragons saw a five-game season-opening winning streak come to an end with the loss. Hutchinson is now 17-5 all-time in season openers. This was also the first loss to Western Wyoming in five all-team meetings with the Mustangs.
Hutchinson (0-1) will now play No. 10 Cochise College (1-0-1) at 2 p.m. CDT on Sunday in Gillette.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Blue Dragon offense finally got going scoring a pair of goals in a span of 2 minutes, 58 seconds.
Sophomore Poppy Smith got the Dragons on the scoreboard with 39:52 remaining in the second half. The goal was Smith’s third career season-opening game goal. She had two goals last year in a 2-1 win over Trinity Valley at season.
The Dragons tied the game at 2-2 just 2:58 later when freshman Ariadne Zwenger scored her first career goal with 36:54 remaining, tying the match at 2-2.
Freshman Annabel Goodman had assists on both goals, becoming the first Blue Dragon since 2024 to have a multi-assist game in a season opener. The last was Katharina Marx, who had two assists in a season-opening win over Western Wyoming in 2024.
After tying the game, Hutchinson couldn’t maintain its offensive surge and Western Wyoming (1-1) took a 3-2 lead with 28:46 left when Brielle Kennelley scored her second goal of the game for a 3-2 Mustang lead.
The Blue Dragons out-shot Western Wyoming 12-8, including 9-5 in shots on goal.
Hutchinson freshman goalkeeper Hanna Holshani had two saves.
Western Wyoming took a 1-0 lead with 18:06 remaining in the first half after a Blue Dragon turnover led directly to Kennelley’s first goal of the game. The Mustangs converted a corner kick with 6:47 remaining as Makaydi Jenks scored for a 2-0 lead.
