A silver 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup truck was recovered from Montgomery County State Lake near Independence after a fisherman discovered what appeared to be a submerged vehicle using a fish finder.

Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies were called to the lake the evening of Aug. 14, and Kansas Wildlife and Parks game wardens used an underwater drone the following day to identify the vehicle. On Aug. 16, deputies, game wardens and divers with the Wyandotte Volunteer Fire Department worked with Rough Country Towing and Recovery to safely remove the truck from the lake.

No one was found inside the vehicle, which officials believe had been in the water for an extended period. The circumstances surrounding when and how the truck entered the lake remain under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 620-330-1000 and reference case number 26-853.
