Big Third Inning Lifts Monarchs Past Junction City

Jackson Schanuel hit a two-run home run and Carson Umphres belted an RBI triple in the third inning Wednesday, leading the Hutchinson Monarchs to a 6-4 win over the Junction City Brigade at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Monarchs trailed 3-1 going to the bottom of the third inning, but the Monarchs quickly rallied to take the lead for good. Jaden Gustafson walked and then Schanuel belted the next pitch over the left-field fence, tying the game 3-3. Brice Wallar followed with a walk, and Umphres hit a towering fly ball off the right-center field fence for a triple, scoring Wallar.

Umphres later scored on a ground ball double play, making it a 5-3 lead for the Monarchs.

Gustafson had two hits and two walks, leading the Monarchs offensive attack, which finished with nine hits.

Vinny Jarrell was the winning pitcher, throwing two hitless innings in relief.

Daegen Vinduska pitched three shutout innings after, earning the save.

The Monarchs improved to 18-7 and will head to Junction City for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
