McPherson City Commissioners Tuesday accepted the low bid from Prairie Landworks for the Hickory Street reconstruction project, the final project set out under the first half percent sales tax. PLI’s bid of $1,001,465.92 was the lowest of nine received, and below the just over $1.4 million engineer’s estimate. One additional cost not included involved concrete testing. Public Works Director Eric Duerksen said construction is expected to begin in mid-August.
Commissioners authorized spending up to $5,000Tuesday for abatement of various nuisances on a property at 105 Arcadian Court, which Code Enforcement Officer Chris Harrington said has been an ongoing problem
Among current issues are junk vehicles, tall grass and weeds, dead tree limbs, and assorted other junk. The abatement will be put out for bid, and the contract will be awarded to the lowest bidder.
The McPherson Police Department is developing a Citizens Academy Program. Assistant Police Chief Todd Martens said the 10-week program is being developed by Kenzi Kaufman, who is interning at the police department this summer Kaufman, a criminal justice major at the University of Kansas from McPherson, explains the purpose of the program.
This is similar to programs that have been done by other law enforcement agencies in the region.
A resolution for National Parks and Recreation Month was adopted by McPherson City Commissioners Tuesday. Director of Public Lands and Facilities Wayne Burns presented the proclamation,

July is designated by the US House of Representatives as Parks and Recreation Month.
An event approval was given for a Community Safety Day July 18th at Linnea Park. Hosted by Heart to Heart CAC, the event is a free, community-oriented event where families can enjoy activities, connect with local organizations and businesses, access resources, and strengthen neighborhood resources. As part of the approval the 100 block of North Elm and the 300 block of East Marlin will be closed during the event. Commissioners approved payment of the second half of the city’s workers compensation insurance premium. The total cost of just over 105 thousand dollars is divided between the city, Board of Public Utilities, and the McPherson Public Library.
City Administrator Austin Regehr also reported staff accountant Page Achilles was recently presented a 20-year membership service award from the Administrative Assistants of Kansas Cities, a statewide network for professional development. AAKC President Holly McGinnis said in presenting the award Page is always the first to respond to email communication among their delegation and always has lots of experience and wisdom behind her responses.
