Jackson Schanuel belted two home runs Tuesday, had four hits and drove in eight runs, and the Hutchinson Monarchs shook off a slow start at the plate in beating the Derby Twins 17-4 in Derby.
The Monarchs trailed 4-0 after two innings and 4-1 after four innings. But the Monarchs took the lead with a five-run fifth inning, with Schanuel smacking a grand slam.
The next inning, the Monarchs scored five runs again. Michael Barham worked a bases-loaded walk, Schanuel hit an RBI single, Brice Wallar hit a two-run double, and Carter Hepner added an RBI groundout.
The Monarchs tacked on six runs in the seventh inning, with Schanuel hitting a three-run home run.
Drew Dechant earned the win by pitching four shutout innings in relief. He gave up one hit and struck out two. He also wriggled out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the fifth inning.
The Monarchs improve to 6-2 and will return to Hobart-Detter Field at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a non-league game against the Wichita Black Sox.
