Public Leadership Roadtrip Set for July 29
GREAT BEND, Kan. —The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce is inviting emerging and established leaders alike, along with those curious about civic engagement, to take a behind‑the‑scenes look at how Barton County’s public institutions operate through Run Ready: Public Leadership Roadtrip, the second installation of the Chamber’s civic leadership program: Barton County Civic Leadership Lab. The one‑day experience will be held Monday, July 29, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
This year’s program takes a roadtrip-style approach, offering participants an immersive look at the essential roles that keep Great Bend and Barton County moving forward. The initiative is part of the Advocacy pillar of the ElevateGBK strategic plan, which focuses on cultivating informed, engaged business and community leaders and inspiring greater interest in public service and elected office.
Throughout the day, participants will travel by bus to four key public institutions: City Hall, USD 428, Barton Community College, and Barton County. At each stop, they will engage in candid conversations with elected officials and senior administrators to better understand:
- Why these leadership roles are critical to the mission and daily operations of each organization
- What these roles actually entail, including responsibilities, scope, and community impact
- What these roles are not, helping clear up common misconceptions and highlight important boundaries
“In a small community like ours, so much of the heavy lifting is done by volunteers who care deeply about this place,” said Megan Barfield, President & CEO of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. “Run Ready helps people see how our public institutions work, who is doing the work, and how everyday residents can step into leadership. When people understand the roles and the realities, they feel more confident getting involved and that’s how strong communities grow.”
Designed to be conversational, accessible, and empowering, the program offers a rare opportunity to see how local governance works from the inside. It is ideal for anyone curious about leadership, civic engagement, or future public service.
Registration is $25 and includes lunch. Space is limited to 25 participants, and advance registration is required. If your plans change after registering, please notify Chamber staff so we may offer your seat to someone on the waitlist.
