The US Senate has confirmed the nomination of Great Bend Attorney Jeff Kuhlman to fill one of three vacancies on the US District Court in Kansas. Kuhlman was confirmed earlier this week on a 52-46 vote.
Kuhlman, who previously served as a law clerk for now Senior Judge Eric Melgren, is currently a partner in a Great Bend law firm and also has served as City Counselor for Lyons.
During his confirmation hearing, Kuhlman and fellow nominee and current Kansas Bureau of Investigation Director Tony Mattivi were questioned about their roles in the 2023 law enforcement raid of the Marion County Record.
Kuhlman had been hired to represent the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and other county officials in suits brought by the paper and staff members. The litigation against Marion County was settled earlier this year for $3 million.
The confirmations of Mattivi and Kansas Solicitor General Anthony Powell have also been forwarded to the full Senate, which has not yet. taken up their nominations
