Area Athletes Competing in Kansas High School Track Championships

Wichita State University’s Crossland Stadium (formerly University Stadium, formerly Cessna Stadium) will host the largest state track and field meet in the nation Friday and Saturday.

Crossland Stadium has been the site for the state track meet since 1970.

More than 20,000 fans are expected to attend the Kansas state meet and 4,000 student-athletes will compete.

Area high schools will be well-represented in Kansas Classes 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

Hutchinson

Hutchinson High School’s Lamar Govain will compete in the 5A boys high jump. He cleared 6 feet in 5A regional competition at Hays.

Hutchinson’s Isabel Castaneda will compete in the 5A girls 100-meter hurdles. She posted a regional time of 16.34 seconds.

Buhler

Buhler High School sophomore Garrett Gleason leads the way for the Crusaders at the Kansas Class 4A state track meet.

Gleason captured four first-place gold medals at the Kansas Class 4A regional track meet last Thursday at Buhler’s Crusader Stadium. He won the 100-meter dash (10.78 seconds), 200-meter dash (22.03 seconds), high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and long jump (20 feet, 4.5 inches).

Placing second for the Buhler girls were Sofia Spies, 200 (25.96); Isabella Friesen, 1600 (5:20.23); Corbin Starkweather, 3200 (11:31.08); Bayleigh Miller, 100 hurdles (16.41); and Sabella Regier, pole vault (10-0).

Placing third for the Buhler girls were Jenna Lackey, 100 (12.7); Isabella Rivera, 1600 (5:20.38); Addsyn Keller, long jump (16-3); and Lauren Welch, javelin (108-7).

Placing fourth for the Buhler girls were Bayleigh Miller, 300 hurdles (48.95); and 4×400 relay team (4:14.31).

Placing second for the Buhler boys were the 4×100 relay team (43.89); Gabe Auxier, discus (152-8); and Myjian Lee-McGlynn, shot put (49-5.5).

Placing third for the Buhler boys were Eli White, 400 (52.43); Owen Kneisel, 300 hurdles (15.68); Kodi Applegate, pole vault (13-0); Jacob Miller, javelin (155-3); and William Griffin, shot put (48-6.5).

Placing fourth for the Buhler boys were Ryan Cherry, 3200 (10:03.41); Owen Kneisel, 110 hurdles (15.68); Dexter Fleeman, high jump (6-2); and Carthrae Courson, long jump (19-4.5).

Hutchinson Central Christian

Hutchinson Central Christian High School qualified four athletes in eight events Friday and Saturday in the Kansas Class 1A state track competition.

Friday:

Nickerson

Nickerson will be represented in Kansas Class 3A at the state meet by three athletes: Delaney Childs qualified in girls javelin and possibly discus, Bella Brinkley qualified in girls triple jump and Kason Bright qualified in boys long jump.

Childs placed first at the Class 3A Cheney regional in the girls javelin (127-7) and holds the school record (134-7) and was fourth in the discus (111-3). Brinkley placed third in the girls triple jump (35-8.75) and holds the school record (36-1.25). Bright placed third in the boys long jump (20-11).

Lyons

Lyons High School will be represented at the 3A state track meet in Wichita by David Pando (100-meter dash, 200, long jump) and Hendrix Starbuck (discus).

“David and Hendrix have set the tone for what this program is all about: Hard work, consistency and rising to the moment when it matters most,” said Lyons track coach Carl Nolan. “They have worked hard all year long and both have been in the big dance before.

“David punched his ticket (to the state meet) in three events (100, 200 and long jump). Any time an athlete qualifies in multiple events like that, it speaks volumes about their preparation and competitive mindset.

“Hendrix continues to dominate in discus, finishing as the regional runner-up with an impressive throw (156 feet, 11 inches). That mark puts him right in the conversation heading into state, and his steady improvement suggests he’s peaking at exactly the right time.”

Hutchinson Trinity

The Hutchinson Trinity boys will send all three of its relay teams to the Kansas Class 2A state meet after sweeping the races in regional competition. The 4×100 placed first in 43.38 seconds, the 4×400 in 3:28.43 and the 4×800 in 8:24.49.

The Celtics’ Kaid McElgunn took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.84 seconds. Alex Guajardo placed third in the 400 (51.49) and sixth in the 200 (23.2).

Trinity Catholic’s Ambrose Pennycuff placed second in the 800 (2:02.44), with teammate Cameron Kiser third (2:02.69). Jacob Lindstrom placed second in the 3,200m (10:12.24), John Lindstrom was fourth in the 1,600 (4:35.59) and fourth in the 3,200 (10:18.81).

Isaac Hammersmith placed third in the boys long jump (20-8), fourth in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the triple jump (43-8).

Inman

Inman’s Tyler Martisko won the regional title in the 800 (1:59.31) and 1600 (4:31.46). Samuel Brensing placed third in the 110 hurdles (15.18) and Bo O’Neill finished second in the discus (161-9). Malachi Brunk was second in the javelin (178-7).

In the girls competition, Inman won the 4×100 relay (49.99) and 4×400 relay (4:06.12) Lily Heflin placed second in the girls 800 at the regional meet (2:18.02). Brooklyn Black placed second in the 300 hurdles (47.4) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.59). Olivia Brunk placed third in the 100 (12.43).

Pretty Prairie

The Pretty Prairie boys 4×800 relay team qualified for state by placing third (8:52.71) at regionals. Gunner Young placed fourth in the 400 (53.6) and Carter Stucky was fourth in the javelin (144-1).

In the girls competition, Pretty Prairie’s Lauren Detter brought home gold medals in the 800 (2:23.57) and 1600 (5:25.89). The Pretty Prairie girls also won the 4×800 relay (11:25.44).

Other Pretty Prairie girls qualifying for state were Kayleigh Vogl, second in the triple jump (35-1.75); and Amity White, second in the 3200 (12:40.92) and third in the 1600 (5:39.94). The 4×100 and 4×400 relays both placed third (53.2 and 4:22.56).

Halstead

Halstead’s 4×100-meter girls relay team of Piper Schroeder, Mackenzie Ervin, Jordy Schroeder and Annie Williams placed first at  regionals with a new school-record time of 49.08 seconds. The same relay lineup placed first at the Central Kansas League meet.

The Dragons placed third in the girls 4×400 relay (4:09.03). Jordy Schroeder finished third in the high jump (5-0) and Williams was third in the long jump (16-8.75).

The Halstead boys will be represented at the 3A state meet by Dacen Dedman, who placed third in the 100 (11.04). Evan Wiedeman placed fourth in the high jump (6-2).

Haven

The Haven girls will be represented at state by Rilynn Patry, who placed third in the shot put (36-4.5).

The Haven boys posted two fourth-place performances: Isaiah Doherty, 3200 (10:06.53); and Cody Holzrichter, discus (150-10).

Larned

Larned’s Cara Herbert will be headed to the Class 3A state meet in two events. She placed second at regionals in the girls 100 hurdles (15.16) and placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.32).

Cheney

The Cheney girls had two first-place efforts: McKinley Sallee, long jump (17-0.25) and Autry Young, shot put (39-8).

Placing second for the Cheney girls were Nikki Wright, 100 (12.72); Kinslie McDorman, 300 hurdles (46.74); Katy Wehrman, pole vault (10-0); and Chloe Scheer, javelin (119-3).

Wright placed third in the 200 (26.23) and Young was third in the discus (116-0).

The Cheney girls 4×800 relay team placed second (10:10.36), the 4×100 fourth (50.22) and the 4×400 fourth (4:11.44).

Cheney’s Sam Johnson placed second in the 110 hurdles (15.27) and triple jump (41-8.75). Isaac Dietz placed second in the javelin (174-2) and third in the shot put (47-3.25).

Cheney’s Stratton Young and Cash Young placed third and fourth in the 1600 (4:31.85 and 4:34.59).

The Cheney boys placed third in the 4×100 relay (43.37) and fourth in the 4×400 relay (3:30.12). Eli Price was fourth in the pole vault (12-6). Callan Murray was fourth in the shot put (43-10.5).

Little River

Little River boys regional champions are Tristan Bristow, 100-meter dash (11.38 seconds); 4×100 relay (44.04); and Christopher Norez, javelin (176 feet, 4 inches).

Little River girls regional champions are Dempsey Lafferty, javelin (135-10); and Havana Olander, triple jump (36-8.5).

Second-place finishers for the Little River boys were Logan Schubert, 100 (11.66); Jhett Ewertt, 200 (23.33); and Cole Dieball, discus (162-5). Tristan Bristow placed third in the 200 (23.52).

Fourth-place finishers were Kal-El Robinson, 100 (11.79); Logan Schubert, 400 (41.67); the 4×400 relay team (3:36.32); and Cole Dieball, shot put (48-2.5).

There were no second-place finishers for the Little River girls. Third-place went to Abby Schroeder, 800 (2:24.82); 4×100 relay team (51.78); 4×400 relay team (4:14.05); and Adelynne Strecker, long jump (16-8.5).

Fourth place went to Jolie Myers, triple jump (33-2); and Avery Lafferty, discus (102-4).

Sterling

Sterling High School junior Julia Kilgore qualified for the Kansas Class 2A girls state track by placing first at regionals in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash.

Senior Zane Farney placed first in the 110-meter hurdles at regionals and second in the 300-meter hurdles.

Farney will be joined by senior Jacob Lewis in the two hurdles races. Lewis also qualified for state by placing third in the high jump.

Wyatt Little qualified for state in the pole vault with a second-place regional finish in the pole vault.

McPherson

McPherson’s Caleb Muehler will compete in the Class 4A boys 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter races. He will be joined in the 800 by Kayden Friesen.

Jayren Stutzman and Ashton Maim will compete in the boys 100-meter dash and Stutzman will also compete in the high jump.

McPherson qualified the 4×800-meter relay, Cayden Wenderott is competing in the discus and Kinnick Anderson is competing in the triple jump.

The McPherson girls qualified the 4×100 and 4×400 relays for the 4A state meet.

Andi Buschbom and Piper Solofra are competing in the long jump, Adri McLeod in the 200, Kamryn Prescott in the 800, Ellie Herrera in the high jump, Cora Svanty in the 300 hurdles and Cayla Weimer in the triple jump.

Moundridge

The Moundridge High School boys and girls track teams will have several representatives to the Class 2A state track meet in Wichita Friday and Saturday.
