HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Last week, on Third Thursday, there was an amazing turnout for The Salvation Army’s Annual Donut Eating Contest. The event was sponsored by Day Light Donuts and emceed by Sheila Regehr.

Adam Keller from Lindsborg, KS, also known as “the Doughminator”, won the “Donut Champion” Award by eating an amazing or horrible 19 donuts in 5 minutes.  Only 1 donut behind him was Hutchinson’s Mayor, Scott Meggers, who ate 18 donuts in 5 minutes. These are truly donut lovers who continued casually eating donuts after time was up.

Lacey Mills, the United Way director of Reno County won the “People’s Choice” Award by online donations prior to the eating contest. “We’re always excited to see who wins by eating the most donut, but the youth in our community who get to go to camp are the true champions. Raising enough money to help send kids to camp in the end is the victory!”, said Major Paul James of The Salvation Army.

Darrell Adams from Kiwanis won the “Raising the Most Dough” Award by raising $706 during the eating contest. While representing Kiwanis, Mr. Adams received the most donations in his kettle while the eating was going on. Unsurprisingly, Lacey Mills was right behind him in donations as well. This was both a great night of eating donuts and raising money to help make camp affordable for kids to go to camp.

Amounts Raised:

$9,997 was raised in online donations

$2201.70 was raised in cash and checks during the eating donuts portion

Totaling $12,198.70.

The Salvation Army camp estimates that the actual cost for them per child is $275-$300/camper.  With the money raised and by parents using our discount code, the cost per camper to actually attend camp is only $20 per child.

All of this is thanks to all of the contestants for coming out to have fun and for helping to raise money to send kids to camp.  There was a lot of fun bantering going back and forth.  As seen in the attached photo, someone gave Mark Buckley, owner of Toy Depot, a GIANT donut because he posted, “I will only eat one donut, but I really want to raise funds to help send kids to camp.” Another big thank you to Sheila Regehr, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Dillons stores, for emceeing the event, for supplying water for the event and giving a $500 gift card which will go towards travel food and snacks on the way to camps this summer.
