Hutchinson Swimmers 15th at State Meet, Buhler Ties for 27th

Hutchinson and Buhler swimmers competed at the Kansas Class 5-1A girls state championship swimming and diving championships Friday and Saturday at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center in Lenexa.

The Hutchinson Salthawks placed 15th in the team standings with 51 points and the Buhler Crusaders tied for 27th place with Belle Plaine with 10 points.

Lansing won the Kansas Class 5-1A state title with 290 points, followed by Blue Valley Southwest 279, Andover 242, Kapaun Mount-Carmel 139, St. Thomas Aquinas 127, Andover Central 127, Hillsboro 125, St. James Academy 107, Leavenworth 104 and Bishop Carroll 97.

Hesston placed 19th with 24 points. Hays was 22nd with 22 points. McPherson placed 32nd with 5 points.

Six girls represented the Hutchinson High School swim team at the state meet. They were AJ Gooch, Alayna Wiggins, Morgan Most, Julianna Stivers, Emma Buller and Mariana Piña.

Gooch placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke finals with a time of 1:11.73 and 16th in the 200-yard freestyle finals with a time of 2:19.7.

Wiggins placed 10th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.18 and was 12th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.29.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Stivers, Gooch, Wiggins and Most placed 10th in the finals with a time of 2:01.8. They placed ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:00.2.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Wiggins, Stivers, Most and Gooch placed 11th with a time of 1:50.07. They placed 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:49.42.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Most, Pina, Buller and Stivers placed 20th in the preliminaries with a time of 4:18.6 and did not qualify for finals.

The Buhler state team consisted of Avery Schrader, Reyne Kaufman, Evey Brooks, Hannah Swain and Regan Walle plus alternates Payton Ball, Addy Tech, Harper Kendrick, Abby Ehret and Lauren Auxier.

The Buhler High School team competed in the 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 free relay. Hannah Swain individually competed in the 100 free.

During preliminaries, the 200 medley relay team of Hannah Swain, Evey Brooks, Avery Schrader and Regan Walle earned the 16th spot with a new school record (2 minutes, 7.58 seconds).

In finals, the Buhler girls 200-yard medley relay team fought hard to not only cut time (2:07.53) for a new school record, but also to move up a spot, earning 15th in the state overall.

Hannah Swain competed in the 100 free preliminaries. She placed 23rd in the state swimming with a time of 1:01.67, but did not make it to finals.

During preliminaries, the 200 free relay team of Regan Walle, Hannah Swain, Reyne Kaufman and Avery Schrader captured 15th place with a new school record (1:52.21).

In the finals, the Buhler 200 free relay team of Regan Walle, Hannah Swain, Reyne Kaufman and Avery Schrader pushed hard. They placed 14th with another school record (1:50.94). This is the highest placement as a team for the girls team ever.

The Buhler 400 free relay team of Hannah Swain, Reyne Kaufman, Regan Walle and Avery Schrader placed 18th in preliminaries with a time of 4:14.7. The foursome earned the second alternate spot to the finals and did not swim in the finals.
