A bear was struck early Friday morning north of Iola.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office was called at about 4:15 AM to location on West Virginia Road east of Old Highway 169, about fives north of Iola of a mile south of the Allen-Anderson County line. Justin Mines told deputies he had just struck a bear.
The bear, who sustained severe injuries, was found a short distance away, and with the assistance of a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game Warden, was euthanized.
Mines, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.
This incident comes in the wake of bear sighting reports earlier this week in the Chanute area. A reminder, if you see a bear, don’t approach it but contact local dispatch immediately and tell them where it was seen, when, and direction of travel.
