Sterling’s Jace Darnauer Places Third in Singles at Class 3-1A State Tennis

Sterling High School junior Jace Darnhauer placed third in singles at the Kansas Class 3-1A boys state tennis tournament Saturday at Prairie Village’s Harmon Park Complex.

Darnauer defeated Central Plains’ Camden Stiles in the third-place match when Stiles retired in the second set.

Sterling’s juniors duo of Ben Bierstedt and Trace DeShon placed seventh in doubles and freshman Lathem Kizzar placed 11th in singles.

Hoisington sophomore Jasper Pawlowski placed sixth and Haven senior Devin Boice places eighth in singles.

Wichita Collegiate’s sophomore Amir Khicha and G Farha placed first and second in singles. Khicha defeated Farha 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match.

Wichita Collegiate senior Charlie Gentile and junior Maddox Drumright defeated sophomore teammates Vihaan Ganganala and James Nolan 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to win the Kansas Class 3-1A doubles championship.

Hutchinson Trinity’s doubles team of senior Sam Pennycuff and junior Vincent Wuertz posted a 2-2 record and earned 2 points for the Celtics. Pennycuff and Wuertz their first match 6-3, 6-1, lost their second match 6-1, 6-0, won their third match 8-2 and lost they fourth match 9-7.

Pennycuff and Wuertz, the No. 17 seed in doubles, were coached by Shelley Dinges.

Wichita Collegiate’s sweep of first and second place in singles and doubles earned the Spartans 60 points and yet another state championship.

Central Plains finished second with 28 points, followed by Sterling with 24, Cair Paravel Latin School 13, Conway Springs 12, Wichita Trinity Academy 11, Hoisington 10, Ellinwood 9, Meade 8, Haven 7, Trego Community 7, Smoky Valley 6, Kansas City Christian 6, Chaparral 5, Neodesha 5, Classical School of Wichita 4, Marysville 4, Ellsworth 2, Phillspburg 2, Hutchinson Trinity 2, Larned 1, Bishop Seabury Academy 0, Cimarron 0 and Perry-Lecompton 0.
