Bullpup Baseball Sweeps Collegiate on Senior Night

McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson High School Baseball team swept Wichita Collegiate on Monday, April 27, on Senior Night, pulling away to win game one 7-2 before surviving a late Collegiate rally to win game two, 3-1.

Carter Bengtson hit 3-3 in game one, and senior Cowen Huggard threw five strong innings to help McPherson win game one 7-2. McPherson took a 3-0 lead in the second, thanks to an error by the Spartans and a two-run hit by Bengtson. Collegiate scored two runs in the third inning to cut the deficit to a single run, but McPherson scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth to pull away.

Bengtson and Asher Allen had two RBIs each. Huggard, Cade Strathman, and Adrian Unruh each drove home a run as well. Huggard got the win on the mound, throwing the first five innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, and racking up three strikeouts. Takoda Linn threw two scoreless innings to close out the win.

Game two turned more into a pitcher’s duel, seeing McPherson pull off the win late, 3-1. McPherson scored a run in the first, third, and fourth innings, leading 3-0 late. The door stayed open to keep the game close, but Colt Chapman threw a terrific game on the mound, earning the win after throwing 5.1 innings.

McPherson led 3-0 heading to the 7th inning, but a hit-by-pitch and a walk put the tying run at the plate for Collegiate. The Spartans would end up scoring a run on a sacrifice fly, but Adrian Unruh closed out the game, earning the save.

McPherson moves to 16-4 on the season. The Bullpups will head to Midwest City, OK, on Friday, May 1, for a triangular. Their first game will begin at 2:00 p.m. against Carl Albert (OK), then they will follow up against Midwest City (OK).
